The idea for The Conversation took root in Francis Ford Coppola’s mind as early as the mid-1960s, but only after the meteoric success of The Godfather was the director able to secure the resources for its production. The plot revolves around a sound technician (Gene Hackman) who makes his living through wiretapping. While recording a young couple, he discovers that their lives are in danger. The lonely man becomes entangled in their lives, decides to betray his employers, and soon realizes that he too is being closely monitored, and that his own privacy has been lost. The film won the Palme d’Or at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival.
