Following Ida and Cold War, two masterpieces that established him as one of the leading voices of European cinema, Oscar-winning director Paweł Pawlikowski returns with Fatherland. The film stars Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), one of today’s most sought-after actresses, alongside August Diehl and Hanns Zischler. The year is 1949. Nobel Prize-winning author Thomas Mann returns to his native Germany for the first time after sixteen years in exile. Together with his daughter Erika, he travels from Frankfurt in the West to Weimar in the East, through a devastated and divided country struggling to recover from the war. The journey forces the father and daughter to confront their past, a homeland that has become foreign to them, and the fractures within their own family. The film premiered in Competition at Cannes, where Pawlikowski won Best Director.
