The Father, Florian Zeller’s directorial debut, was a major success and earned Anthony Hopkins an Academy Award. His new film brings Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem together on screen, alongside Paul Dano, Stephen Graham and Patrick Schwarzenegger. Bardem plays Miguel, a successful Spanish architect living in London with his wife Sofia and their two daughters, who receives an irresistible offer: a tech billionaire wants him to design a luxury survival bunker for his family in case of a global catastrophe. For Miguel, it is the project of a lifetime, both a professional challenge and a lucrative opportunity. Sofia, however, is appalled by the idea and the values it represents. As Miguel becomes absorbed in the project, their disagreement intensifies and threatens the life they have built together. Zeller turns this timely premise into an elegant marital thriller about love, money, morality and the anxieties of our time. The bunker gradually becomes a metaphor for the walls we build around ourselves, while Cruz and Bardem bring their magnetic chemistry back to the screen.
