Walter Neff, an experienced insurance salesman, visits the home of a wealthy client and meets his young and alluring wife, Phyllis (Barbara Stanwyck). Their attraction quickly develops into a sinister plan: the two intend to kill her husband and collect the money from his life insurance policy. They seem to have thought of everything, but one of Walter’s colleagues at the insurance company begins to suspect that something about the story does not add up. Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler adapted James M. Cain’s novel for the screen, creating one of the defining works of American film noir. Its black-and-white cinematography, interplay of light and shadow, sharp dialogue and Stanwyck’s unforgettable performance turn this crime story into a dark and seductive tale of desire, greed and the price to be paid when you think you can plan the perfect crime.
