It Will Happen Tonight

“I’ll wait for you for as long as you want. But will it happen sooner or later?” This line from Hungry Heart, Eshkol Nevo’s collection of short stories, so captivated director Nanni Moretti that he decided to adapt the book for the big screen. Spanning 14 years, the film follows the interrupted love story of Matteo (Louis Garrel) and Greta (Jasmine Trinca), from one European city to another, from one chance encounter to the next. Sometimes the timing is wrong, sometimes life has already taken them in different directions, yet something between them refuses to disappear. With sensitivity and humour, Moretti follows them through the years, exploring a love that must find its place alongside family, commitments, distance and the passage of time. Garrel and Trinca’s superb performances, their wonderful on-screen chemistry and Moretti’s assured touch earned the film an enthusiastic reception when it premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
