France, Belgium 2016 | 80 min. | No Dialogue
A beautiful, dialogue-free animated film that was nominated for an Oscar, depicting the life of a man stranded on a deserted tropical island inhabited by turtles, scorpions, and birds. The film’s title alludes to the classic children’s film The Red Balloon by Albert Lamorisse, and just like that film, The Red Turtle offers viewers of all ages an aesthetically uplifting, thought-provoking, and emotionally moving experience. The debut feature from Dutch director Michael Dudok de Wit is a co-production between Wild Bunch and Studio Ghibli (founded by the great animator Hayao Miyazaki). The film won a special prize at the Cannes Film Festival and was chosen to open the prestigious Annecy Animation Festival.
