Sergei Loznitsa (Donbass, A Gentle Creature) returns with a powerful new film, hailed at the recent Cannes Film Festival. The Ukrainian director takes us back to the Soviet Union of 1937, where thousands of letters from prisoners, detained by the communist regime without cause and pleading for release, are burned in a small room, destined to disappear forever. But somehow, against all odds, one letter finds its way to the desk of a young, justice-seeking prosecutor. His obstacle-ridden journey to uncover the truth leads him all the way to Moscow, to the office of Stalin’s Attorney General.
